CIBIL Impact FAQs
How loan decisions affect your credit score.
Q01
How accurate are CIBIL impact estimates?
These are model estimates based on industry-published guidance from CIBIL Education, Experian India, FICO, Bajaj Finserv, and Paisabazaar. Bureaus do not publish exact deltas — actual changes depend on your full credit profile (age, mix, utilisation, recent activity). Use this as a directional guide. For your real, live score check myscore.cibil.com.
Q02
Why does a missed EMI hurt the score so much?
Payment history is the single biggest factor in any credit score (35-40% weight). A 30-day missed payment (DPD30) typically drops the score by 50-100 points; 90+ DPD triggers an NPA-like classification under RBI IRAC norms and can drop scores by 150-200 points. Bureaus also keep the late-payment mark visible on your report for 36-84 months.
Q03
How long do hard inquiries affect my CIBIL score?
A hard inquiry (when a lender pulls your bureau report) typically drops the score 5-10 points and stays visible on the report for 24 months, though the score impact usually fades after 6-12 months. Multiple inquiries within 14 days for the same loan type are often counted as one (rate-shopping window).
Q04
What is the difference between settled and closed loan status?
'Closed' means you paid the full outstanding principal + interest as agreed — this is positive. 'Settled' means the lender agreed to accept less than the full amount as a one-time settlement — this is adverse and typically drops the score 75-100 points. The 'Settled' tag stays visible on the bureau report for 7 years and significantly hurts future loan eligibility.
Q05
Can I rebuild my CIBIL score after a default?
Yes. Rebuilding takes time but is doable: (1) Stop new applications for 90 days, (2) Pay every existing EMI on time without exception, (3) Keep credit card utilisation under 30%, (4) Consider a secured credit card (against an FD) to add positive payment history. Most defaults can be recovered to 700+ within 18-24 months of disciplined behaviour.
Q06
Does checking my own CIBIL score lower it?
No. Checking your own score is called a 'soft inquiry' and has zero impact. You can check your CIBIL score for free once a year at myscore.cibil.com or unlimited times via aggregator apps. Only 'hard inquiries' from lenders affect the score.
Q07
What CIBIL score do I need for a personal loan?
Most banks need 750+ for the best personal-loan rates and pre-approved offers. 700-749 is usually approved but at higher rates. 650-699 may be approved by NBFCs at premium rates. Below 650, mainstream banks typically decline. See /rate-board for current rate bands by score.
Q08
How are CIBIL deltas in this calculator sourced?
Each action in the dropdown shows its source attribution inline. We use mid-point estimates from CIBIL Education, Experian India FAQ, Bajaj Finserv Insights, Paisabazaar DPD tiers, RBI IRAC norms (for NPA classification), and ClearTax (for settled-loan impact). All numbers are documented in the source code comments for full transparency.
