What is the current PPF interest rate?

PPF interest is reviewed quarterly by the Government of India. As of Q1 FY26, it is 7.1% per annum, compounded annually. The rate is announced on the Department of Posts / banking portals at the start of each quarter.

Is PPF interest tax-free?

Yes — PPF qualifies under the EEE (exempt-exempt-exempt) regime. Contributions are deductible under Section 80C (up to Rs 1.5 lakh / year), the annual interest is tax-free, and the maturity amount is tax-free.

What is the PPF lock-in period?

15 years from opening. Partial withdrawal is allowed after year 7 (up to 50% of the balance at the end of the 4th preceding year). Loan facility from year 3 to year 6.

Can I extend PPF after 15 years?

Yes — in blocks of 5 years, with or without further contribution. Submit Form H within 1 year of maturity to extend. The account continues to earn interest indefinitely if not withdrawn.

What is the minimum and maximum PPF deposit?

Minimum Rs 500 per financial year (avoid inactive-account penalty). Maximum Rs 1.5 lakh per FY across all your PPF accounts combined (Section 80C cap).

Can I open a PPF account for my child?

Yes — minor PPF account is allowed. The Rs 1.5 lakh annual cap applies to parent + child combined under Section 80C, not separately.
